While we are in the city (we live in a smallish apartment) serious investment in time is required to keep Magic & Mia healthy & happy. Here they become like “infants” who needs to be handled with care. While we are on the farm they come on their own & become like “adults.” While we are on the farm they do not depend on us for their exercise, toilet jobs etc. Physically they tire themselves out, mentally they will have more than enough stimulation watching & guarding each & every moment from their vantage points. While we are in the city they depend on us for exercise, they depend on us for doing their toilet jobs, they depend on us for entertainment, companionship & play, even when they are asleep they keep a watch on us.
Have a look at how much time one spends with them:
5.45 am to 7.30 am: a longish walk, interspersed with some jogging for about 6 – 7 kms
7.30 am to 8 am: After the “iron fist” discipline during the walk, its time to unwind, chill & play on the terrace…..i get a chance to do some exercise & develop my six-pack !!
8.30 am to 9am: getting their food warmed up & giving them food etc
That makes it 2.5 hours in the morning
Then we’ve some time for ourselves to do our own things till 4.30 pm. May be in between we just have to take them down for a pee. Exactly at 4.30 pm, like an alarm clock they will be out of their slumber & stretching to signal to us that its time, if we are typing away on our laptop keyboards, Magic will literally get his head below our hands & lift it off the key boards, whereas Mia will be giving us one of those WTF looks & if we ignore her, she lets out a very different kind of bark, indicating……..now come on, move your butt, its play time !!
4.30pm to 5.30pm: play time in the terrace
6pm to 6.30pm: warm up their food, give them food etc
6.30pm to 7pm: take them for a small walk, also toilet jobs etc
9pm to 9.30pm: again play time in the terrace or sometimes we carry a few sausages & have some fun games along with obedience training. If no one is around or watching us, then we put on some music & do the Harlem dance together…its unbelievable fun !
9.30pm to 10pm: a quick small walk for toilet jobs
That makes it 3 hours in the evening
Finally its time to say good night. It’s not that we can have a great sleep sometimes both of them clamber into the bed ….watch this video, it’s so much like what happens with us, the only difference is that Magic & Mia gets under the blanket, literally hugs us & sleep
So totally we spend about 5 – 6 hours a day of quality time. We are not calculating the time spend in cooking their food…..thats not an issue. They just love it when they know their food is getting cooked…. this is a super click by partner.
6 hours a day is a lot of time isn’t it ? On the other hand the time i spend with Magic & Mia is pure magic & happiness…….Now can anyone quantify happiness ?
‘guess nobody can.
Actually speaking doing all the above tasks isn’t a big deal for me, i enjoy doing it. For me (us) their well-being is of out most importance. For physically active canines like the Caravan Hounds good exercise is the key, then everything else like discipline falls in place.
But still it isn’t easy, for example we hardly ever go out in the evenings, for the last two & a half years (since Magic came into our lives) partner & me have not had a holiday or a quiet time to ourselves. Its tough, when its just two of us, when we have more people in the house then things become a bit easier….. anyway such is life in a hound family !!
peace & love
