When cable TV came into our lives we were in awe of Steve Irvine & his calisthenics with various reptiles & animals, however after a while we stopped watching his programmes, his approach became too repetitive & predictable. I know he has done a lot towards the well-being of the animals he had interacted, but that’s a different matter.
When Magic & Mia came into our lives we started to look for online resources to help us…. i was again in awe of the so-called Dog Whisperer aka Cesar Milan. After watching a few episodes, one felt something just wasn’t right. I asked myself……. How can i (or we humans) be a “Pack Leader” to sight-hounds ? It’s an impossible ask, they are way ahead of us in almost everything philosophically, intellectually, physically, even spiritually….& not to talk about their sensory system.
Due to my long drives to the farm i always have a collection of podcasts to listen & i happened to hear one with Roger Abrantes, which made my eyes open & he decoded & de-mystified this pack leader theory beautifully. Do listen to this interview it is the most interesting & the most illuminating conversation i’ve heard in a long time. Whenever i lose my temper with Magic & Mia i make it a point to re-listen to it again to regain my equilibrium.
Another book which i always read & re-read again is the one gifted to me by partner…..Its by Alexandra Horowitz called the Inside of a dog. It has some amazing insights into our canine family members.
Recently a friend send me a link & asked me to watch this video. After that i started reading Anna Breytenbach & about her work….The inner calmness with which she approaches & communicates with animals is simply awesome.
After reading & absorbing whatever i could from all the above resources, once again i get the same, similar, sinking feeling …. of being an inept & inadequate companion to Magic & Mia. ‘Guess this is a continuous never-ending learning process. Understanding Magic & Mia is as challenging as trying to understand my teenage son, or trying to understand my ailing father, or trying to understand how to weave together the various flora & fauna in our farm land, so on & so forth.
Sometimes i feel our dependence on Cell phones has reduced our capacity to communicate & understand each other among many other things. I didn’t have a cell phone till i was 40, however still i (we) did manage to communicate……….didn’t we ? (3 boxes of letters with partner is a standing testimony !!). Today if i’ve to meet someone at 11am at a particular place, i will be there. However the trend is now to ask where are you ? Have you reached ? i will be there in 15 mts or can we meet later etc, etc. get the drift……
On a different note everyday i watch people who while walking with their canine companions are also chatting away on their cell phones……. bless them huh !! I would never do it while i walk with Magic & Mia, i’ve to tune in 100% with them & to the surroundings, if i am not tuned in…. then there will be no walk, it will be hara-kiri.
Peace, love & a dose of reality !!
