Common sense knowledge is that dogs eat grass sometimes. We too discovered that Magic often heads for the grass in the park and nibbles. Like most people we assumed he did it to settle an upset tummy or to be able to throw up because he was feeling sick.
Of course we slowly realised that he did not always throw up after eating grass nor did he show signs of an upset tummy each time we saw him nibbling grass.
One of partner’s friends had suggested to him to grow wheat grass for magic. Being the farmer that he is, in the last few months we’ve put that idea into practice. We planted some khaapli wheat seeds saved from our winter crop in pots in our skinny balcony in Delhi.
Magic enjoys nibbling away periodically. Also he can happily munch away at fresh cuttings, most times showing the same enthusiasm as when he gets a biscuit treat.
Here is an interesting link on how to grow wheat grass in a more organised way and ideas on how to feed dogs with fresh wheat grass and other healthy food.
We are not that organised, so we tend to leave Magic to go nibble and when we do remember, we do go cut some & add it to his food or give him a snack!
peace. love & remain forever young
One day while walking with magic a man comes running to me
Hey…. is that a whippet ?
No… he is a hound
Oh… is he a grey hound ?
NO…..he is a caravan hound
oh, sorry, never heard of that !!
While passing by some really irritating school kids : yeh bakri jaisa lagta hai (this dog looks like a goat !!)
then the most irritating of all questions
uncle; yeh kitme mei liya ? (how much did you buy him for?)
me: Aapko, aap ke pitaji ne kitne mei liya tha ? (how much did your father buy you for ??). Surprisingly this question of price is only asked in Delhi. In Pune nobody asked us about the price tag & refreshingly many people in Pune also knew about Karwanis.
then again :
Yeh baahar se laaye hai kya? (You got him from abroad??)
me: naahi, yeh deshi maal hai yaar !! (This is very much indigenous)
Seeing Magic’s body structure the usual questions that are posed :
uncle, usko khaana nahi dete hai kya ? (you don’t give him food or what ?)
me: kya karoon, mere paas khaana nahi hai, aapke paas khaana hai to dedo (what to do, i do not have any food to give & if you’ve food with you, why don’t you give him !!)
then …. dekh, patla kutta, uncle yeh patla kyon hai ? (why is he so thin ?)
me: arre mei patla hoon na, isliye yeh bhi patla rehenga (since i am thin, so he will also remain thin)
Then once a a child came running to Magic to touch him etc…….then her agitated mother started shouting :
beta….. usko haat mat lagana, yeh kutta bimari hai ( daughter…… don’t touch this dog, he looks sick to me)
then once a friend comes in & says :
gosh, he looks like a poet… (me: so shall we call him Pablo Neruda ? )
then another friend comes in & says
maan… he looks like a ‘naga warrior’ ( me: whats that ?)
another person says :
he looks like a dinosaur (what ??)
a sister-in-law says :
he looks like a tyrannosaurus (get lost !)
he looks like a Praying Mantis………(shit, sic !) after the ‘saurus crane‘ episode this one took the cake !!
Then again… yeh kaat ta hai kya ? (does he bite ?)
me: well, not as much as we humans do
Once while crossing a posse of policemen through a police barrier
dekh, dekh… yeh dodnewala kutta (look, look, this is a racing dog !)
Every other day some passer by has to comment : Khatarnaak kutta hai! (He looks ferocious).
We think to ourselves… it’s good that looks are deceptive ( hehe !)
With some overtly irritating people one does not feel like sharing his name so:
Uncle; what’s his name ?
his name is Pappu
uncle; what’s his name ?
his name is Munnabhai
uncle; whats his name ?
his name is Paan singh
While in Pune people would get down from their car/bike & take photographs. Here in the park, when he takes off for a chase with friend Loca, people stop & take videos.
Having said all that- Magic also has a great fan club & many people/children do call out to him & he happily goes wag, wag, wag to all of them, soaking in their love & affection.
untill next time…. ciao
Magic was down a bit with a loose tummy for a couple of days, also while walking with him in the morning he was desperate to eat a particular type of grass, which i let him eat as much, then he puked out & again more loosies.
So we called his godfather deba to check out what to do & what to give him.
He said boil a raw banana & add it into his food.
& viola…. the next day he was back to normal !!
Even though i love walking with magic, but i hate the fact that i walk him on the leash…….I loathe all this paraphernalia of collar, leash, commands etc. Unfortunately, as of now we do not have much of an alternative.
If magic spends 30mts in the park with loca…. he is happy, he is exercised, he eats well & everything else falls into place.
Thank you Loca for the azaadiyaan !!
I’ve thought about it & realised that actually i do not have an answer.
As a child i was always fond of all animals. I wanted to be with animals & was comfortable with animals. Early childhood memory takes me to a dog named Jimmy, who used to come our house for food, but i’ve lost all photographic memory of how he looked etc. I just remember one story of how he once was sitting outside our bathroom door barking away. When my mother finally went to have a look she found a snake inside the bathroom.
Summer holidays were always anticipated because that is when some of my cousins and I headed to our maternal grandparents house for a month-long stay. Our days were spent in of my great-uncle’s place where he had cows, fish, cats, bees & of course a whole pack of Rajapalayams. We used to take the dogs out for their walk, play with them, give them their food, bathe them etc. Then my great-uncle passed away & all the dogs also went.
I often pleaded with my dad….. let’s have a dog, but for my mother & sister it was a complete NO. So the story ended there & the chapter was closed.
It was about a decade & a half back i plunged myself into full-time farming & agriculture & we had a lovely little farm in South Gujarat about 150kms from Bombay. In the farm we had the best of coconuts & during the mango season, we had a great crop of delicious mangoes. Some thefts started to take place & we needed a dog. It just happened that we were in a friend’s house when we saw this cute lil’ pup playing around in the neighbourhood. We made some inquiries about the pup and asked the owner if we could take the pup. He agreed and so partner went & bought a basket & we took him to our farm…. we named him Magic.
Then our son was born & they both bonded together in a great friendship. Magic protected him fiercely. Then we had to move on & the farm was sold. Magic was a free spirit & had become quite a community dog. At least three neighbours were happy to have him, we were not worried about him….. but , yes we missed him.
Then life took us to Delhi & from day one when we got a house facing a park, our son would always look to me & ask when are we getting a dog ? But somehow we were not ready for it. I was not keen on getting a foreign breed dog. I’d think to myself… lets adopt a stray but we never got down to it. In fact partner’s friend offered us a labrador pup. I was the villian in that because i showed no interest & our son had kind of given up on me. He even started telling me then lets get a fish tank & have some fish at least, may be in mock sarcasm !
Then again life came to a full circle for me. Once again we had a farm & with it thoughts of having a dog kept coming back. While travelling i have this habit of buying many newspapers & in one of them i happened to read this article written by a known journo (she & her husband i knew are crazily in love with their dogs). I had kept the newspaper clipping with me for future reference. Then one day while clearing up things on my table I found the article again…. so i logged in & searched for caravan hounds. Up came Deba’s blog & wasn’t i intrigued & i went through it for the whole day, Mayekar’s phone number was also mentioned in the blog so i called him & spoke to him. Finally, I left a comment on Deba’s blog (thankfully !!).
In my mind it was clear that if we are going to have a dog- it is a caravan hound. But i knew it was not going to happen soon as we could not have got a dog and left it in the care of someone else on the farm.
Then deba wrote saying if I was still interested he had some pups. For partner & son it was love at fist sight & another Magic walked into our lives after more than a decade…. & one more circle seems to complete.
peace, love & a few more circles to complete
then there is no physics or biology…. in fact there is nothing.
Here in this snap Magic & Oliver look great together, but they are leashed. One bizarre evening something snapped inside Magic vis-a-vis Oliver. They were playing, the chase & the run was on between both of them, which also comes with the usual nips (nothing serious) etc, again the run etc, we didn’t see anything amiss till then.
A moment later for the first time i saw Magic turn into a really aggressive dog & charging at Oliver. Luckily Kabeer was close enough to catch him & take him away. After that we have tried for many days to get them together & play. But NO & unfortunately Magic seems to be in a strange unforgiving mood. It’s something we cannot understand & something very un-Magic about it also. So, as of now, when Oliver comes, we need to take Magic away.
At the same time he has found a new mate Loca with whom he shares a fantastic chemistry !!
peace, love & some unanswered questions on chemistry
