We called Magic’s godfather & god mother (deba & kusum) over & as usual there were some reasons to celebrate……….(as if we need any reasons !!)
& don’t i love those eyes of his.
peace, love & more happy birthdays together !!
When he came into our lives, communications were through nips & bites & of course his looks. All three of us had nip marks on our elbows every day. There used to be communication break downs also…… we did not understand what he was trying to tell us nor could he make out what we were trying to communicate to him. To put it modestly…… it was mayhem. Plus to complicate matters in a nice way his intelligence levels were much higher than any one of us !!
He was never keen to be petted or touched, (for eg : like a labrador), he would never turn over & show his tummy. Nor would he lick any one of us. Only when he wanted to sleep, he wanted a lap, or a shoulder to rest his head on, that was about it, as far as wanting a physical show of affection.
He has two different types of nips, one is tiny nip with just his front teeth, then another where he just holds our elbow with his mouth. One was when he was hungry & wanted food, the other i am not quite sure.
The way he is looking & his eyes also communicate quite a bit & so with the position of ears, now his face also has become very expressive sometimes when he is happy… he looks as if he is really smiling !! His yawns are also something we have not figured out. The first month with us… we played a lot of hide & seek with him, calling our names… go find him/her & also calling him, he used to really enjoy it & probably was mentally stimulating for him
Then there are certain types of whines… its difficult to understand what he wants, mostly it’s when he wants to go pee or pooh & the most interesting one is when he comes to one of us after finishing a meal, nudges us with his nose, with a slight whine & then goes back to what he wants to do…. is he actually saying thank you for the meal ?? No idea.
A couple of occasions he did deliberately pee in his bed & once even on our bed as a mark of some protest…. we still don’t know what that was for. I always did riyaaz for a few hours daily on my bansuri, the first time i played the bansuri after he came it was mayhem, so i put it aside. Then again one day when i started playing he went berserk & looked petrified & was whining & whining, and when i sat with him he climbed onto my lap & fell asleep & in his sleep he pee’d on me. Then sadly for me my bansuri playing became history !
When he is hungry & if one of us is in the kitchen then he sits at the kitchen door, after he cleans up his bowl & if he wants more, then the satyagraha will restart at the kitchen door, then some more food & he is off to what he wants to do. If he does not want to eat ….. then he will not eat one more morsel, show the bowl to him he will just bolt away as if he has seen a ghost or something. Very rarely have we hand fed him or fussed him over food & we always take away the bowl after he finishes his meal or even if it is unfinished. When we have our meals he likes to come & check out what we are eating but never tries to nibble anything off our plates. We do not give him anything either when we are eating but if he smelled something good in our plate & he did not get it in his meal…… well, then its a different type of sulky satyagraha & he has some attitude !!
When any one of us come back into the house his tail & his bum becomes a version of “shakira”, & after his “shakira” style welcome (he never jumps on us), he likes to smell our bags, then our sandals, then he is off to what he was doing. But one thing for sure is that his “shakira” style welcome is so joyful & brings in so much unbridled happiness into our otherwise mundane lives.
& here he is just after enjoying a good meal…. telling us it was yummy!
peace, love & learning more ways to communicate without having to talk !!
When he is playing with other canines he is fully involved. Yet when he gets hassled about something he is quick to come back to one of us for protection & a feeling of security
Here he is watching something that he not fully comfortable with from the security of yours truly!
Once again he came & sat next to me to check out something that he wasn’t comfortable with
But all this is a passing phase ….. Magia is going to be independent as he grows up & will not seek yours truly for protection & security soon enough!
There are a few people with whom I just click & have a rocking time together. Whereas with others I just have a working relationship and with a select few the less said the better.
Getting back to Magic and Yuma- they just rock !!
Magic met Yuma before he came to us & it was obvious that they share a unique relationship. They can play & frolic with each other endlessly!
Magic, like any caravan hound, likes to run & instigate a chase whereas Yuma, the mastiff, has her own techniques that seem almost like judo. Here she is lying in wait for Magic to complete his circular run & then intercept.
She uses her body weight to great effect too……& here we go…boom !!
Magia tries to break free
finally he manages
The chase begins again. It reminds me of one of my favourite childhood songs on Mohammed Ali
Sometimes they do check out on each other but its all very quiet. Hardly a bark & never, ever a growl…. call it perfect chemistry or whatever!!
Yuma brilliantly using her body weight to bring down magia
The more the merrier… even Zoe joins in but that might mean trouble. Zoe- the big sister is a moral police when magia & yuma are frolicking together
Now for the nth+1 time Yuma & Magic are lining up for one more run & one more session of WWF
This can go on & on. It’s such a pleasure & joy to see them play together. Not to mention getting to know Ashish & Shreya!!
Bye for now…. & hopefully there will be many more good times to follow…..
