Finally he was through with all his vaccinations & it was time to take our Magic out for a walk in the park……
He was mortally scared. The new smells were overwhelming. It was also that time of the year when cow dung manure was spread out in the park- fatal attraction for a puppy. All the local dada’s (dogs) barked and when they charge at him from below parked cars it was terrifying. He just ran & hid himself under a bench so our walk ended in just a few minutes.
These quick jittery walks continued for some weeks. He would pull on the leash, sometimes just stop walking so he had to be carried. He was eating lots of grass & vomiting. He ate stones and sometimes went completely crazy. Anything moving had to be chased whether it was a dry leaf or a squirrel, or a pigeon or a plastic bag. He was hassled by people walking, jogging or running. Once we happened to be in the park when the ‘laughter gang’ went hehehahahahaha.…… he ran for his life !!
Thankfully the weather has been good & we could take him down in the afternoons when the park is quiet with few people………
We have realised how different he is from other pups. A labrador or a German Shepherd or a Dalmatian or Boxer- even a mastiff seem to tag along with their handler so very easily. I notice that these pups don’t really need to be on the leash- they happily tag along & even if they wander they come back when they are called.
But not so with our ‘karwani’
Debashish had warned us to be careful when we leave him free. Very casually he mentioned while blowing out some smoke : ‘Bro: there is no guarantee that a karwani will come back & don’t make it into an ego issue with him…. Later i heard from someone: Oh…. you named him Magic…. so you are expecting him to vanish into thin air, like all karwani’s do… (shit !).
We had decided that we will not have a trainer for Magic since there are no trainers who understand the psyche of a caravan hound. 99.9% percent of dog training done in India is by breaking the spirit of the dog.
So what are we left with ?? Just love & fresh air ??
I’ve braced myself for this long journey ahead & I share my partner’s dream that one day Magic will walk with us without a leash. How will we do it we don’t know. As of now it looks like its going to be quite a challenge for all of us & it’s not going to be an easy journey…. nothing is working & sometimes the walks are getting unpleasant for him & me…
Apart from asking us to be 200% sure before we bring in Magic into our lives & warning me many a time that a caravan hound can never be ‘owned’ & telling us N number of times that do not expect Magic to go fetch a ball etc for you…. the most important “document” deba send us was about the diet for a caravan hound.
Here is what he wrote:
* calcium & multi-vitamin are must till 1&1/2 yrs of age…now, you should give both, by the measure of quarter tea-spoon a day…after 60 days to 90 days; 1/2 a tea-spoon a day …after 90th day to 6 months of age; 1 tea-spoon of both…from 6 months to 1&1/2 yrs; calcium 2 spoons a day & multi-vitamin 1 spoon a day…
* brushing coat (not teeth) or massage everyday will give you a happy & healthy dog. Massage with a mix of Camphor & Coconut oil once in a week, keep first aid kits ready etc, etc.
* if you feed out of your hand & provide him with anytime snacks he will lose appetite, start rejecting his food & turn out to be in-disciplined…* do not give your dog milk…dogs do not have the enzyme to break/digest milk…he will suffer from diarrhea…you can give him curd or chaas (butter milk) in summers… * de-worming should be done every 3 months till the last day of his life…
Now to the recipe (* please replace all chicken/mutton/ beef/pork with Paneer (Cottage Cheese) in case you are veg)
# from 45 days to 60 days of age, you should give 4-5 meals a day… 60 days to 6 months 3-4 meals & 6 months of age to 1&1/2 yrs 3 meals a day …1&1/2 yrs to the time he takes 2 meals, give him 2 meals a day…
Since we are a fish eating family…. we added fish into his diet, but deba said never give him fish without scales, because they have a high lead content, so he gets his fill of river fish & also fish eggs (roe).
We also keep making slight alterations, for eg:In his veggie mix we started to add a bit of mung or masoor dal, or some soya, also a piece of Beetroot & white or red Pumpkin, then sometimes we stop giving him any meat, then he gets eggs (boiled/ scrambled or sunny side up, he likes to lick on the sunny side up) or paneer (cottage cheese), which he loves or some tofu.
And isn’t he growing…..
peace, love & happy growing !!
Most of the times when i log in for the day i am not expecting anything, but the usual stuff & then one hits the delete button a few times & log off & then move on with other things for the day. But on 28/11/2011 in my inbox there was a message which read :
hi, this is debashish…u had once written on my blog enquiring about caravan pups…if u still are on the look out, i have a litter (http://caravanhound.blogspot.com/2011/11/litter-pari-x-ozaan-dob-241011.html)
i thought about it & replied to him saying that …. well, actually not now & i need more time to settle many things in my life, our farm is new, i’ve no earning from it, plus we will be in the process of a major shift in a year’s time, after our son’s SSC exams. But i also forwarded his mail to my partner & & also our son.
I knew what our son’s response would be & i thought i knew what partner’s response will be. I assumed that she would say …. yes, lets wait till the next litter & let things settle down vis-a-vis the farm, you are also away for long periods…. etc, etc !!
For once i was indeed happy to be wrong !!
& here he is catching a last bit of the sun for the day & also giving me some quizzical looks !
then looking at some happenings down stairs
or is it the squirrels on the wires ??
peace, love & happy viewing !!
When magic came this was the mattress we gave him to use (btw this was the mattress which our son had used when he was born some 14 summers back)
It is winter & the floors are cold, so we got a bed for him. Just when we were buying the bed itself, someone at the shop told us not to buy…. they said : this dog will outgrow it very soon, but we got it anyway. When we laid it out for him…… he immediately hopped in & looked happy to have his own ‘lil space !
and also like any baby, he liked to have all his toys close to him , try throwing them out of his bed & he will hop out & bring them back. This is the only place in our house where we get the winter sun & he just loves to bask himself here. In fact all of us vies for that place. The bed also served another purpose for magic i.e : if anyone is not watching he would quietly slip out into our tiny balcony & eat mud & dry leaves (from the pots), & also bring those dry leaves & hide them under the mattress for later chewing !!
& when he is deep asleep… he looks like this !!
then on weekends he gets company also !!
then on a dark, cold day…. ‘do not disturb’ sign is put up in an inside room !!
Even though magic is tiny, he looks very regal & also very different from other dogs & especially in a place like dilli where people (with or without dogs) are so stereotype & cannot accept something different.
One our first trip out with magic to the vet, he was sitting nervously next to me
a person walks in & asks
what dog is this ? yeh konsa breed hai ?
i say “hum usko Karwani kehte hai aur english mei caravan hound kehta hoon”
then he says “ye saurus crane jaise lagta hai”
anyway here is our ‘saurus crane’ chewing away some of his frustration
and here trying out some soccer skills
our own sancho, pancho, groucho !!
untill next time…. ciao !
